F1H2O WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP 2018
The fifth edition of prestigious F1H2O World Championship was held in Amaravati and for the first time in Andhra Pradesh. The adrenaline thumping
water sport event made a come back after more than a decade with international drivers to race on the pristine waters of River Krishna.
The three day exciting event of F1H2O World Championship made a final finish, with Shaun Torrente of Team Abu Dhabi taking the top position.The fifth edition of Grand Prix India was held in Amaravati on River Krishna, bringing international teams and their drivers to the Sunrise State.
Organised by Andhra Pradesh Tourism Authority (APTA) along with F1H2O Main Team and their local partner, Malaxmi Group’s India Xtreme Adventure Activities Private Limited, the World Championship drew crowds in large numbers from all corners.
The championship started off with a vibrant flagging off from the Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, who was delighted with the new beginning of extreme sporting in the state. He shared about the efforts of state government to bring world class events of similar nature, imbibing the
spirit of sporting in the people. The Chief Minister further made an announcement that F1H2O will be hereafter held every year on River Krishna and the spot would be named as NTR Sagar.
Day two of Grand Prix was adrenaline kicking with 9 teams and their 19 drivers making fast paced laps on the river at the BRM qualifiers.
The race kicked off at 3 30 PM in the afternoon when the energetic racer of Team Amaravati Jonas Andersson (Boat 14) zipped on the waters of River Krishna and made it to the top slot in the Q1 and finished fifth in Q3. Jonas finished the race with 45.22 seconds with 46.58 and 46.81 in Q2 and Q1 respectively, in the day 2 of fabulously opened F1H2O World Championship. In the qualifying round, each driver had to finish 2 laps, each lap across 2.125 km to be finished in lesser time in order to qualify for the Finals. All the 9 teams, 19 drivers raced in the 3 qualifying rounds. First and second were combined races and the third qualifying race was an individual round. For the very first time, Marit Stromoy, a woman driver from Germany raced and stood second place in the qualifying round. Her speed accounts in Q3 as 44.72 followed by Q2 46. 38 and Q1 47.63.
Overall Shaun Torrente from Abu Dhabi stood first followed by Marit Stromoy from Germany in the second place and Erik Stark from team Abu Dhabi in the third.
The main race kicked off with much celebration, with more than a lakh viewers across the Ghats. The event was jam packed, with fans cheering for their lead driver Jonas Andersson. Day 2 of F4 racing took place where San Whittle, F1 Atlantic Portugal, Benjamin Jelf, Team Amaravati and Ahmed Al Fahim, Team Victory Dubai stood at first, second and third positions. This was followed by the much cheered parade lap and the Grand Prix final race thereafter. After 44 laps of adrenaline pumped racing, Shaun Torrente of Team Abu Dhabi took to the lead and made it to the first place followed by Marit Stromoy of Emirates and Erik Stark of Abu Dhabi in the second and third places. Jonas Andersson of Team Amaravati who was going steady at number 4 and 5 positions was out of the race eventually due to engine failure. His partner Erik Edin was still on the run, making it to position 6 at the end.
Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu spoke at the closing ceremony, applauding the efforts of the drivers and their teams. He expressed happiness over Amaravati becoming global podium for such a prestigious event. He shared that AP Govt is making all the efforts to make Andhra Pradesh the best tourism spot in the country. The CM and Tourism Minister Bhuma Akhila Priya then felicitated the winners. The CM gave away awards to Shaun Torrente, Marit Stromoy and Erik Stark. He and Minister Akhila Priya then felicitated Nicolo Di San Germano, Promoter, H2O Racing, Paulo Di San Germano, President, F1H2O, Raffaele Chiulli, UIM president, Lavinia Cavallero, Vice President H2O racing, Mukesh Kumar Meena, Secretary Tourism, Himanshu Shukla, CEO, AP Tourism, Y Harish Chandra Prasad, Founder and chief Mentor, Malaxmi Group and Sandeep Mandava, CEO, India Xtreme Adventure Activities Private Limited.
